From Dapper Lawyer to Rapper Lawyer

Jan. 25, 2015

Dear Clients, Friends, Family and Fans of the Superbowl bound Carolina Panthers:

As a lawyer I wear many hats so when a client recently asked me to help them bring a popular rapper to Charlotte for the CIAA, I immediately put on my entertainment lawyer Borsalino (an Italian hat). Retailers, hotels, bars, transportation, restaurants and salons rake in over $30 million dollars in one week during the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Basketball Tournament or CIAA as it is affectionately known - one of the biggest sporting events in the country! Just like the Superbowl, sporting events of this magnitude require a lot of legal oversight. I never gave it any thought that my law firm could make an imprint on this event, but with approximately over 100,000 attendees; 21 arrests; hundreds of traffic stops and several DUI arrests and not to mention a civil rights violation when a hotel imposed a CIAA tipping tax at last years' event, I find it necessary to have a CIAA legal discussion...." for sheezy"! As you prepare for the CIAA (and now the Superbowl!), let The Montgomery Law Firm assist you with: negotiating venue contracts, alcohol licensing, artist contracts, traffic violations, event planning, outdoor street festivals, civil rights violations, night club issues, noise ordinances or even any post CIAA criminal matters. Be sure to read our Q&A for specific details on legal issues during the CIAA Tournament.

Q & A with Eric A. Montgomery, Esq.

Q: I am part of a group planning its first big CIAA event. Do we need to have written contracts in place to protect our interests?

A: Absolutely one should have written agreements in place. By having a written document, it helps to both protect your interests and provides a basis for proving any claim you might need to make. One should also consider obtaining event insurance to protect your interests as well.
